History
of Cypress SeniorNet Learning Center |
In November 1999, Alan Briscoe, Cypress Senior Center Director met with Dave Peyton,
Superintendent of the Office on Aging and staff from Almaden Senior Program to discuss the
possibility of developing SeniorNet Satellite Programs at the Cypress and Almaden Senior Centers
. When Alan was previously at Willows Senior Center, there also were earlier discussions about
setting up a satellite program at Cypress. However, at that time, the Willows SeniorNet Staff
felt that they did not have adequate volunteer resources to expand the program. At that time,
Paul May, alone was providing computer classes at Cypress on a limited basis.
The Willows SeniorNet Learning Center had been in existence for over five years, and the
SeniorNet Staff realized that there was a great demand for computer training throughout the
County and hence the meeting with Dave, Alan and Almaden staff.
Besides the folks from the City, present was Phil Carnahan, Coordinator of the SeniorNet Program
at Willows and the Liaison Officer with SeniorNet Headquarters in San Francisco who explained the
process of establishing the program at the November 1999 Meeting. Almaden was chosen as a
satellite site because of community demand and the strong interest of the area's City Council
person. Cypress was a natural with Alan Briscoe's personal commitment, Paul May's proven
success in computer training and the continued interest of the Center's Membership.
A follow-up meeting was scheduled with Joe Walton, Director of SeniorNet Learning Centers, who
announced that SeniorNet would waive the Satellite Fee of $800 and provide the Centers with
six Personal Computers and two printers to start up the program. The first session of computer
classes commenced in August 2000.
