Introduction to Computers (our lab uses Windows XP)PREREQUISITE: None.This eight week course (one day per week, two hours per day) is intended for beginners. Focus will be on the fundamentals needed to use the computer with emphasis on the use of the mouse and keyboard to accomplish simple tasks. Students will be exposed to word processing. The course will cover techniques for performing basic editing functions in a document, creating, naming, saving, and opening/closing files. After successful completion of this course, the student will have the basic knowledge for use in intermediate level SeniorNet courses. |
Using Windows XPPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers and basic mouse skills.Using Windows XP is designed to teach the student about the latest version of Microsoft's operating system. The student will learn not only how to use the features of Windows XP, but how to modify the operating system to make it easier to do what the student wants to do with the computer. The course explores the new features of Windows XP such as the new Start menu, the Help and Support Center, System Restore and right-click operations. Also covered in detail is Windows Explorer which is used to manage drives, folders and files. In addition, the student will learn to use the maintenance tools built into the operating system. There will be one class on the use of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express for Web browsing and sending/receiving e-mail. |
File Management (Where is My Stuff??)PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers and Windows 98 / XP.Need help in locating all the stuff you have created or downloaded on your computer? Another question is where should I put my stuff? This class will help you answer these questions. Learn how to use My Documents, to create file folders, change the view, create shortcuts on the Desktop, and more. |
Basic Word ProcessingPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, basic typing skills, and a fundamental understanding of Windows 98 / XP.Basic Word Processing is the first part of a planned three eight-week course sequence devoted to word processing using the program Microsoft Word. The course begins with a review of fundamentals: using a mouse, using scroll bars, changing window size, and creating folders. Using Word you will create new documents, open saved documents, modify documents, and save with a new name. You will learn basic editing techniques: specifying margins, inserting tables, and adding headers and footers. You will also learn how to enhance your document by adding graphics and how to customize by using fonts to specify typeface, size, styles, and color. Ample time will be provided in class for student practice. |
Intermediate Word ProcessingPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, basic typing skills, Basic Word Processing course, and a fundamental understanding of Windows 98 / XP.This is the second part of a planned three eight-week course sequence devoted to word processing using Microsoft Word. The course begins with a review of fundamentals: use of the mouse, scroll bars, changing window size, creating folders, and Word program basics. We will explore some special features that will enhance documents. You will learn to use special characters, Autotext, Autocorrect, Autoformat and how to add special effects. Ample time will be allowed in class for student practice. |
Advanced Word ProcessingPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, basic typing skills, Basic and Intermediate Word Processing courses, and a fundamental understanding of Windows 98 / XP.Brief review of Word basics. We will explore some special features that will enhance longer documents. You will learn to use headers/footers and endnotes; track changes to documents; use tables; merge data into documents; create labels; and create document outlines, table of contents, and indexes. |

It will help you keep inventories, membership information, address lists, telephone lists, etc. Use the Database to search and retrieve particular items or to list data alphabetically, chronologically, numerically, etc. |

Database & SpreadsheetPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers and basic mouse skills.This course studies the record keeping abilities of both spreadsheets and databases. The spreadsheet can be used for household budgets, investment analysis, and other applications where one desires to calculate sums, differences, averages, percentages and other financial or mathematical data, and be able to present the results in graphs and charts. The database is a tool used to make lists - telephone numbers, address lists, inventories and the like. Databases can be sorted to present lists in alphabetical, numerical, or chronological order. As an example, address book entries will be merged to prepare mailing labels. |
America Online (AOL)PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, Windows 98 / XP, and a PC using AOL as the Internet Service. Provider. Access to a PC connected to an Internet Service Provider.We will only explore AOL (America-Online) with emphasis on SeniorNet, AOL's e-mail service, and AOL as an Internet Service Provider. SeniorNet is a special area of AOL which enables you to communicate with other SeniorNet AOL subscribers through chat rooms, bulletin boards, and library files. The focus will be on ways of finding information on the Web. |

Web Page DesignPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers and one other INTERMEDIATE course. Students must be able to find, open, close, duplicate, and rename files completely ON THEIR OWN.This class will cover the different types of web pages and the various categories of web sites. Students will create a home page using one of the providers of free server space. We will also discuss the following: the future of the Internet and the World Wide Web; server platforms, clients and browsers; HTML coding; GIF and JPEG images; JavaScript rollovers and Java applets; CGI and interactive forms. |
Searching the Internet for Genealogical InformationPREREQUISITE: Internet (AOL will NOT be used in this class) and proficiency in the use of the mouse.This course is designed for obtaining information about ancestors or family members on the Internet. We will search some well-known as well as little known sites that can help piece together a family history. |
Writing Your Family StoryPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, Basic Word Processing and proficiency in the use of the mouse.REQUIRED MATERIAL: digitized photos on a diskette or photos that can be scanned in class.This course uses Microsoft Word to document a family story. We will cover the following elements in writing a family story: title page, dedication page, prologue, background, biographies, family stories and epilogue. We will learn how to insert a watermark as a background picture as well as inserting pictures within the text. |
Family Tree MakerPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers and basic mouse skills.This course is designed to give some insight for using Broderbund's Family Tree Maker program and becoming familiar with some of the programs features. You will be encouraged to create your own "Family File", documenting facts about you and your family. In addition to collecting and saving family facts, the course will cover sharing information with other genealogy programs, the printing of family trees, adding photographs to the file, creating a family book and other genealogical reports. |
Graphics & ScanningPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, two INTERMEDIATE courses, and proficiency in the use of the mouse.This course features the use of Adobe PhotoDeluxe on the Windows 98 platform. Related topics such as graphic file formats, file compression, and scanning software are discussed. Due to the complexity of Graphics/Scanning and with the availability of only three flatbed scanners some of the lab exercises (e.g. scanning a photo) will require a coach's assistance and be done in pairs. Most exercises will be done individually. Students must be able to use Windows and to follow written procedures independently. |
Graphics: Digital Photography & ScanningPREREQUISITE: Introduction to Computers, ability to locate and copy files to/from a folder on the C-drive from/to a "floppy" disk. Students must be able to complete Mouse Proficiency Exercises 3, 5 and 6 each in ten minutes or less.Learn about electronic graphics: creating images for printing and displaying them on the Web. This course will include how to operate your digital camera to capture beautiful portraits, landscapes, and close-ups. We will cover the use of a scanner to convert printed media into digital format. We will discuss details about file types, compression schemes, and editing images using Adobe Photodeluxe. |
You Too Can Be A Graphics ArtistPREREQUISITE: Introduction to computers, Basic Word Processing, proficiency in the use of the mouse and understanding cut/copy/paste process.Basic graphics tools such as Microsoft Paint, Word Drawing and WordArt will be used to create posters, flyers, signs, letterheads and more. Students should pre-select projects they would like to produce in class and then the proper graphics programs will be used to complete them. The course will be dependant on the students selection of projects. |

Basic Keyboarding (FREE, student may purchase the program - on CD - for home use)PREREQUISITE: None.This material is designed for those who either do not know how to touch type or for those who wish to brush up on their typing technique. The software program that will be used is a self-paced tutorial, containing 12 lessons. Instruction will be provided initially in an open lab environment and will include how to open the software program as well as how to use it. The student will learn how to operate the alphabetic keyboard by touch and how to key words, sentences, and paragraphs with good keyboarding techniques resulting in a high rate of accuracy. Speed building will not be a key component, but is available to those who desire it. |
Buying a Computer (FREE)PREREQUISITE: None.The "Buying a Computer" class will be conducted in a single two hour session. It is intended to help the student decide what IBM compatible computer to buy to meet their present and future needs. To accomplish this the student will learn what the key hardware items are in the computer and what software is required. The student will then be shown two methods that will help them determine the specific computer to buy.
